What do you actually do after a psychedelic experience ends… but the process doesn’t?
In this episode, I explore one of the most underrated tools for psychedelic integration: kanna — a legal, non-psychedelic, psychoactive plant that supports emotional regulation, mental clarity, and nervous system balance.
While psychedelics are known for their intensity, insight, and disruption, the reality is that most of the work happens after the experience in the messy, everyday moments. Integration can feel overwhelming, confusing, and hard to navigate.
This episode introduces kanna as a gentle, daily support tool that helps you stay with what’s already unfolding.
Topics Covered:
What psychedelic integration really looks like beyond the peak experience
Why integration can feel overwhelming
What kanna is and how it works (SRI, PDE-4 inhibition, empathogenic effects)
The difference between psychedelics vs. kanna
How kanna supports nervous system regulation, mood, and mental clarity
Why kanna is considered a sober-friendly alternative in social and recreational spaces
The role of presence in integration — and why it matters more than insight
How kanna can support identity rebuilding after psychedelic experiences
Real-life ways to use kanna during integration

Hello everyone. Happy Friday. You're gonna have to bear with me today 'cause I went to an event last night. It was a like a matchmaking networking event and I was talking for hours and hours. So my voice is a little bit crispy today, but let's get into it. I got my little matcha going. And I'm so excited about today's topic.
I've been wanting to record this episode for a while and it's about using kanna' as a tool during psychedelic integration. Something that I am not only passionate about, but very informed about. So let's get into it. 'cause yeah, we're not here today to talk about the peak experiences. More so like the everyday moments that happen after the peak experiences.
So this is the psychedelic integration period. And yeah, how kanna can support that process. And we often [00:01:00] ask ourselves this question of what do we do when a peak experience ends? But maybe the experience itself continues to unfold. There's questions that we're still asking, things that we're still trying to unwind.
What do we do? Integration can be very hard and challenging. I know that firsthand. I know that from a lot of you who reach out to me. More and more actually, I'm starting to hear from folks who are struggling with psychedelic integration, and I hope that today's episode. Introduces a new tool for you because integration can feel so hard because a lot of emotional material is surfacing and present.
Sometimes our capacity to hold it all is. Challenged Limited. And what we wanna do is expand that capacity, and I think that kanna is something that allows for us to expand our [00:02:00] capacity to move through integration. In different ways, but this challenging psychedelic integration process can lead to nervous system overload.
It can cause trouble with day-to-day functioning, and sometimes we wanna reach for another peak experience instead of. Really stabilizing into the day-to-day, and I think that's where we can go wrong. Most people actually need day-to-day support to come back into their lives, and that's exactly what kanna offers.
It helps to bridge that gap between the peak experience and The mundane of everyday life. So I'm gonna do a quick intro to what kanna is. This is not a kanna 1 0 1 episode. At the end of the section, I will refer you to some external resources that you can go to if you wanna learn more about the plant.
But kanna is a South African succulent, [00:03:00] so it's like in the Cacti family. So imagine the South African desert, the Western Cape region of South Africa. The plant actually crawls on the desert floor and it has stems and flowers. The stems contain active alkaloids that create a psychoactive effect on humans when ingested, but is a traditional plant.
It has traditional roots in many different. Cultures and it's been used, ceremonially socially and as a true day-to-day ally for cultures indigenous two South Africa, such as the Koi and the Sun. The modern application of kanna is newer. There is research around kanna that is about, 50 years old and counting, but Westerners like myself are using kanna quietly, but at a very increasing rate for mood support, emotional [00:04:00] balance focus.
It definitely has this new tropic. Kick to it. Calm nervous system regulation, everyone's favorite buzzword right now, and even as a sober friendly recreational substance. So kanna is not psychedelic. It works on mood, energy, cognition, and emotional balance. So it is psychoactive, but it's not going to create this like trippy.
Out of body hallucinogenic experience. There's no altered perception. There's no loss of control. But it is something that will change the way that you feel, and I'll get into that in a second. So whereas psychedelics are about intensity and depth and disruption, right? We're shaking the snow globe with the psychedelics.
They're also about insight, right? kanna is more about subtlety consistency and daily support. And [00:05:00] unlike most psychedelics, kanna is actually legal, making it more accessible and just safe for many people out there who don't feel comfortable using. Substances that are not legal on a day-to-day basis.
So I wanna talk a little bit about the mechanism of action and the properties of kanna. So kanna is an SRI. It's a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor. People have called it nature's Prozac. It definitely has this antidepressant like quality because it naturally supports serotonin signaling.
By slowing its re-uptake. So SRI inhibition, it leads to some of these effects that we feel so enhanced mood. We feel a little bit happier depending on the dose. We may feel even euphoric. Which is why some people also call kanna Nature's, MDMA. Um, SSRIs can also create an experience of emotional stability and [00:06:00] balance.
You're less reactive, you're more centered, you're more calm. You don't feel the need to emotionally react and grasp as much. It can create reduced stress in both the body and the mind. Increased openness and sociability is also another thing that SSRIs can create for us humans.
So kanna is also a PDE four inhibitor, which may promote cognitive function. So memory neuroprotection, you're gonna get that focus, that sharpness, that concentration without feeling overstimulated and jittery. So this PDE four inhibition also provides an. Lytic and antidepressant effect. So it also supports mood through this PD four inhibition.
And so as a felt effect, this means again, reduced mental noise and chatter, which is gonna [00:07:00] lead to more presence. It improved focus. It's easier to get into a concentrated flow state, and it is going to overall lead to improved mood. And actually, as I'm recording this, I have my kanna. Sitting right beside me, which I've actually been taking daily for the last few weeks.
So excuse me while I just take my little spark kanna capsule as we're recording this. Mm. As I was going through these benefits, I was like, oh, yes, a reminder that these are all things that I need right now as I am moving through Iboga integration. So let's keep going with the properties of kanna. So kanna is also recognized as an empathogen.
An empathogen is a substance that helps us to increase empathy for both ourselves. And others. It also means that it's a heart [00:08:00] opener, which, MDMA is also in this category of heart opener and pathogen. So this, my vocal fry is so bad today. You guys bear with me. I need to stop yapping so much, but I can't help it.
I've just been meeting so many incredible people lately. So in pathogens, again, they will help people feel more present and therefore connected to others. Because when we increase our sense of empathy, we're really there with people. We're really there with ourselves, and so we are present through emotional connection and openness.
And we're not in fear, right? We are more willing to open up and to connect with both ourselves and our inner state and other people. Many people are reporting that kanna is useful for social anxiety and that it helps them feel more confident. And I wanna be careful with saying how it makes people feel more confident For like people [00:09:00] who have experimented with cocaine, for example.
Cocaine is something that makes you feel more confident, but it's very much like in the ego in the mind. You just wanna like put yourself out there. Whereas kanna makes you feel more confident from this more heart space and it's much more gentle and subtle and soft. And so the last thing I wanna talk about.
About khanna's properties is that it's also adaptogenic, adaptogens are substances, herbs, botanicals that help us to adapt to stress over time and to regulate the nervous system over time. Adaptogens actually change our stress response when we work with them for a longer period of time. So kanna helps the body and the mind to manage stress.
The PDE four inhibition has anti-inflammatory properties and neuroprotective properties, so also by reducing mental noise and increasing presence, [00:10:00] it helps us to manage the. Internal mental stress, and depending on its alkaloid profile, and I'm not gonna get into alkaloid profiles here today, but depending on the alkaloid profile, basically different alkaloid profiles create either more stimulating or more calming effects.
And so kanna can also have a very calming downregulating effect depending on that. Amazing, right? kanna is just an incredible plant and it has a lot of properties that are supportive for people post-integration, especially those in post challenging integration. And so as a result, kanna feels it's generally.
Subtle, gentle, soft and just again, depending on the dose, you can amp up the effect. But that daily working dose is like a mushroom or LSD microdose, and it is about [00:11:00] what you feel, presence and calm, but it's also about what you don't feel chaos and. Fear and all of those things. So you can amp up the effect with a higher dose of course, but also mentally you're gonna feel clear, sharp, present, less scattered and messy.
Khanna's. Alkaloids help to improve cognition, concentration. Focus, and that doesn't necessarily mean that we just have to use kanna to be productive and do our work. there are many benefits to improving cognition, concentration, and focus in everyday life. Whether you're being productive at work or you're being present with your coach or therapist during a session where you're discussing what's going on for you and of course, socially right? You're more open, connected, quietly confident, and finding calm amongst the chaos. So that's a little bit about kanna. And if you wanna dive deeper, I actually just created a pretty comprehensive [00:12:00] guide to kanna.
You can find that@kannawellness.com. I'll have it linked for you in the show notes, both kanna wellness.com and direct link to download the guide. And in that guide you'll learn more about. What it is, how it works, dosing guidelines, different formats of kanna available on the market to fit your lifestyle and your needs.
I cover kanna in recreational and social spaces and also cover when and where to use kanna 'cause it truly is adaptogenic in terms of how we can use it. And I wanna share just a little bit with you guys about my personal story and. Journey with kanna. So of course I came to know about kanna through this wonderful podcast, modern Psychedelics, which I have been recording for six years.
As a result of talking to experts and being. Being in front of a lot of different voices and [00:13:00] content and research about psychedelics. I definitely was introduced to kanna before. Most of definitely the general public, but even before many people in the psychedelic space, and kanna is one of those.
Plants. That's really interesting. 'cause we almost treat it like we treat a psychedelic. It almost like fits into the psychedelic framework where people are using it like they would use micro doses. You can also have high dose ceremonial experiences with kanna, but it's not actually a psychedelic, but it fits in this world.
And I loved kanna immediately for its very gentle and subtle effect. I will say it took me a few. Days of dosing kanna to find my sweet spot and to really be like, oh, okay, there it is. I get it. And of course, over time my relationship with it has just beautifully grown and evolved. But, immediately I found kanna perfect for day-to-day support because.
I am not a mushroom girly [00:14:00] at all. Mushrooms definitely had their role in my journey. I would say that they were like a footstool or a stepping stone towards other medicines, but. For me, I had been using mushrooms to microdose for quite a while, and I don't know what it is, but I just felt like I didn't want to microdose mushrooms anymore, and kanna really filled its place perfectly for those days where I do need a little bit of emotional, mental, and nervous system support.
And it wasn't until my five M-E-O-D-M-T integration that I really connected with kanna. I was energetically resetting and landing after this huge spiritual experience, and I found it hard to just function in the day to day. And what kanna provided me during that time was this grounding and gentle support that helped me [00:15:00] just come back into my life.
And then in September, 2024, I launched kanna Wellness. This is Canada's. First dedicated ?Kanna
Business, and since then I have been bringing this plant to my fellow Canadians, focusing a lot on education and just introducing it to a new market. So many Canadians do not yet know about this plant. It's definitely a lot more popular in places like.
The UK where there's already been established vendors and in the us, specifically in California and kanna is slowly reaching the Canadians. I would say thanks at least thanks partially to my efforts in just showing up in the community spaces and showing people. And teaching people about this plant.
And more recently, kanna has been very helpful for my Iboga integration period.
Iboga has [00:16:00] been revealing my mind to me and how my mind wants certainty and answers the way that my mind projects into the future and tries to predict. Force what will happen, how my mind has a really hard time trusting life and being present. And also it's been illuminating the thoughts and fears that my mind loops around.
And it's been a real challenge for me to stay present in the anxiety of it all. And I brought kanna in more recently as a very intentional day to day support as a tool to help me support my mind at a neurochemical level, supporting my serotonin so that I can stay present in the now rather than spiral into the future.
So it really creates and support, it really supports me mentally. And while it's not erasing. [00:17:00] Thoughts and thought patterns. It is allowing me to loosen the grip on them and to step out of the spiral. It's this very subtle support that makes a big difference. And I still have to put the work in.
Nothing is a cure, but I find that as I'm working with kanna more during this time, it is easier for me to put the work in. There's less friction and resistance.
And everything that I've been gaining from kanna recently during this very challenging time is what inspired me to record today's episode.
Okay, so now you know a little bit about kanna. You've heard about my journey with kanna and how it's been supportive for my own psychedelic integration. Now I wanna talk a little bit more directly and clearly about why kanna works for psychedelic integration.
[00:18:00] And I may be repeating myself a little bit here, but I really wanna just outline this very clearly how this little psychoactive from South Africa can make such a big difference during a challenging and messy time. Of course, we talked about the emotional support, right? kanna helps us to be more present with our emotions, even the really hard ones, and beyond that, kanna.
Because it reduces that mental chatter. We can move from the head to the heart. Again, like speaking to kannas and pathogenic properties, it puts you in your heart and it allows you to engage with your emotion from a more open heart and a clear mind. Side note, clear mind, open heart is the official slogan for kanna wellness.
But that aside, if we're stuck in this emotional funk, kanna can support with the gentle uplift [00:19:00] without feeling overstimulating or forcing like a fake or ingenuine state of being. The emotional ups and downs become softer. And one thing I love to say about kanna is that it softens the edges so it can offer emotional steadiness and softened emotional edges.
So if you're feeling really edgy, post psychedelics, might be a great support for you. And then of course there's the mental support, the antidepressant and. Anxiolytic properties, which by the way just means anti-anxiety properties. It helps the brain chemistry return to a more harmonious balance, and it can help to bring into focus what really matters Now.
Instead of ruminating on the past or spiraling into the future, the serotonin support helps us to stay present and [00:20:00] it can gently support work obligations during this time. We all gotta work, right? We all have to show up for life. Perhaps some of you are parents. Perhaps some of you are taking care of your parents and you still gotta show up even if you're moving through it.
Speaker: If you have been listening to this podcast for a while, you have probably heard me talk about kana, and today I wanna share something special. I started Canada's first kana company, Kana Wellness, because I truly, truly believe that this plant has a place in hectic, chaotic, undersupported modern life.
Kana is a psychoactive plant. But it's not psychedelic, it's a gentle, grounded, and incredibly supportive little plant from South Africa's desert region. It can help with uplifting mood, promoting cognitive clarity and [00:21:00] focus . Gently supporting energy, relational openness, and nervous system balance, it's quite remarkable.
So whether you're working, creating, connecting, or just trying to feel a little bit more grounded in yourself, kana meets you where you're at. And what I love most about KANA is how versatile it is. You can use it day to day for mood support, calm and presence, replacing traditional. Psychedelic micro doses, but it also has an amazing place in social settings supporting sociability and connection without the crash or chaos of alcohol and other substances.
Like I said, it's em pathogenics, so you're gonna get that nice heart open social feeling with it, and it can even support performance and recovery or be used for inner immersions and emotional processing when you want to go inward. KANA [00:22:00] is an empathogen, which means that it's heart opening while still being grounding, presence, enhancing and clear.
It's gentle, yet surprisingly effective, and it's a sober friendly alternative for recreational spaces. It is something that's suitable for daily use with a strong body of research behind it. And a solid safety profile. So if you are in Canada and you're curious to explore, you can shop@kanawellness.com.
And for my dear podcast fam, here, I have a special code for you, modern 15 for 15% off your first order. So shop now support my little business with my mom. At kana wellness.com, that's K-A-N-N-A wellness.com. That's linked for you in the show notes, and it's modern 15 for 15% off your first order.
Speaker: So that's what I really [00:23:00] like about kanna is that it integrates seamlessly into your life by supporting. Brain chemistry. And a big part of integration is also rebuilding one sense of self. As much as we are shedding and releasing and walking away from things we no longer want to carry with us, we also want to be rebuilding and working towards what we do want.
And so the daily support. For the brain helps us to take small steps every day to build a new and improved life for ourself. So there's this real application to real life that kanna allows for.
kanna is also great at cultivating a grounding presence, it's an earth medicine, so of course it's gonna have that grounding property, but it's also very gentle as a daily support supplement. Like I said, [00:24:00] life keeps going and even when integration feels hard, we still have to show up.
kanna helps us with presence, which means that we can keep showing up for life and build a presence based identity right as we're rebuilding That sense of self kanna can help soften. Identity confusion by quieting the mind and helping us to reconnect with the present moment and the senses. I know a lot of you are struggling with this identity crisis phase, as I heard back from many of you.
When I posted the last episode, 1 35 and my post on Instagram about that episode went a little bit viral. So if you are out there and you are navigating identity, confusion, identity crisis, you're really asking yourself the big question [00:25:00] of who am I and what do I want? Who am I really in this moment?
First of all, you're not alone. I am navigating it right here alongside you. And second of all, something like kanna can really support that process. Okay, so the other reason that kanna is very good for psychedelic integration is that empathy. Because it's an empathogen and it helps us connect to ourselves and others, it's going to soften our emotional defenses, making connection, feel more natural and more authentic.
So there's gonna be less judgment, there's gonna be less fear going through your mind, and instead you're going to be with what is about yourself and about others. Psychedelic integration can feel overwhelming when too much starts coming up too soon, and so kanna can support. That [00:26:00] process with empathy, right?
When we increase our empathy, we can be gentle with ourselves and tell ourselves it's okay. I'm going through a lot, but I don't have to figure it all out right now. I'm going through a lot, but that doesn't mean that I can't still be present to my life and enjoy my life. I'm going through a lot right now.
I see myself for that, right? This is that kind of dialogue and energy that the pathogenic quality of kanna allows us to connect to. Lastly, kanna supports sobriety, and I wanna bring this up because often after a psychedelic experience. A lot of us will desire sobriety, but what do we do if we.
Want sobriety, but we still wanna go out, we still wanna go to festivals, we still wanna hit the dance floor on the [00:27:00] weekends. We wanna go to parties, we wanna socialize, we don't wanna isolate ourselves. And in these situations, you know what is required is some social lubricant some energy support, right?
kanna at higher doses used recreationally, offers a. Social friendly and sober friendly mood and energy uplift. And I do wanna say, while we do constantly refer to kanna as sober friendly, because it is not going to alter perception, it's non-toxic, hopefully it's non-toxic, depending on where you're getting your kanna from.
But it, yeah, like I was saying, we often say that it's sober friendly because it's toxic, it's non habit forming. And it doesn't alter perception or reality. I will say that for the sober community out there, it's up to each individual to determine for themselves [00:28:00] whether kanna is appropriate for a sober lifestyle.
I know some sober people who also wouldn't touch kanna because it does alter in a way, but not. In a way that alters perception or distortion of reality. I will say that it supports sobriety, but also if you are living a sober life, check in with yourself about that and if it feels right for you.
So by now you can probably get a sense of why kanna is so supportive during psychedelic integration. I am just remembering an important disclaimer, right? Because kanna is an SRI, we do want at least two weeks of space between kanna and Iboga and Ayahuasca. So that's just like a disclaimer that I have to put out there.
And we definitely don't wanna be taking kanna at least two weeks before Iboga or Ayahuasca.
Speaker: That being said, a lot of people are [00:29:00] finding beautiful synergy between kanna and cannabis, which is actually an ancient combination used by the indigenous South African people who worked with kanna. And that combination can definitely feel more like MDMA in my experience.
And people are also finding beautiful synergies between kanna and mushrooms. So explore at your own risk though. So I will say that kanna is not a shortcut, it's not a replacement for integration work rather a enhancement, and it's not something that will fix. Your experience, and it's not a way to bypass difficult emotions.
It's best to view kanna as a tool to support you in being with what's already there, but in a more regulated, emotionally stable and mentally present manner. So I wanna be very clear here. kanna is a tool that can support your own [00:30:00] engagement with your integration process. How and where does kanna fit into psychedelic integration?
Let's get into some actual examples of how you can use kanna to support you. The most simple way, if you're just using it for daily mood support, like I just did right now, I'm having it with my morning matcha here as like a daily supplement before my day. And I actually prefer to take that before food 'cause I find that I connect with it more strongly.
But yeah, you can just take it with your morning ritual, with your fistful of supplements in the morning. Taking kanna before doing something reflective like journaling. I find that it supports me in being able to actually really sit with what's coming up, and it's more about inviting presence rather than insights and breakthroughs, right?
That's important. It's more about presence than. Breakthrough kanna can also support [00:31:00] your therapy or coaching sessions. Again, more presence, more honesty, less emotional reactivity and walls is gonna allow you, I think, to make some more sustained progress with yourself. Again, like using kanna before a social event, when you feel the pull towards sobriety.
It can be a mid-afternoon support for people instead of coffee. Often psychedelics invite lifestyle change and we're working on reducing caffeine, reducing sugar. I will say that kanna is also an appetite suppressant. Wait, let me, I need to make sure that I am actually getting this right.
Okay, so it says here that modern users report that it can help manage eating habits. So yeah, that's just another little benefit there, which is interesting. I know that they would use it as like a hunting medicine in South Africa as well. Similarly to [00:32:00] Iboga. Yeah, you can also use kanna.
When you're about to have, maybe a more difficult conversation, a conversation that you feel nervous about, perhaps you're implementing some boundaries or you're addressing something that's uncomfy. You can also use kna to support yourself in triggering environments. I know a lot of people find being around family while they're working with psychedelics can be really triggering.
Especially after a big. Psychedelic experience. kanna can be a beautiful way to resource yourself during these more challenging interactions with others. And if you have travel plans after psychedelics, I used kanna to support. Presence, energy and mood during travel in Eastern Europe, and I took this trip about five weeks after I sat with Iboga.
I was still pretty shaken, but of course I wanted to be present for my [00:33:00] travels and both me and my mom. We're using kanna during this time, and you can actually watch some of my vlogs on YouTube. I have a series called Diaspora Diaries. It was my trip through the Balkans with my mom and my dad after 15 years, and it was like root medicine after root medicine.
So check that out. Just a little side note, I'll have that linked in the show notes as well. So let's start wrapping things up here. I do wanna say if you are in an integration phase right now, and maybe you're feeling untethered or. Overwhelmed, you're trying to find your footing again. I want you to know that you probably don't need another peak experience.
You probably don't need another ceremony, and I really urge you to instead bring your focus to supporting your day to day life. And that's what this episode [00:34:00] is really about. That's what kanna is really about for me. It's what I'm building my entire. kanna brand around. It's about meeting people where they're at in chaotic environments, both chaotic environments like cities and chaotic internal environments
so it's not about replacing the work, it's not about bypassing anything, but it's about supporting yourself. And staying present in it. So, you know, kanna has been one of those supports for me, which is why I am sharing this with you today. It's something that I've leaned on during some of the most mentally and emotionally.
Intense integration periods of my life times two five, MEO and Iboga. And yeah, I'm just, I'm hyped on it and I hope that to people who are listening, who feel a sense of intrigue and curiosity about it to give it a shot. 'cause again, it is legal and [00:35:00] accessible in Canada and the United States. And most places in the world making it also travel friendly, by the way.
